You don't *need* it, but it helps with the slang and the american drawl.

After a while you get the gist of the slang and patter. The complete set dropped under £50 for a couple of days last week on Amazon. Back at 60 now.

That's a debate in itself! I prefer the Wire theme, season two in particular.

Justified really hits its stride in its second season. The first season tends to have a single case/situation per episode but they ditch the procedural format for continuing storylines in the second series.

Timothy Olyphant is also in the excellent Deadwood. The first two series are superb but the third and final season was a let down for me and it didn't get a proper end. They were going to have a couple of TV movies to complete the story but they never materialised. Its not for those with sensitive ears - every other word is a profanity.

If you are looking for some ideas here are a couple of lists...
iMDB Highest Rated Shows
Guardians top 50 TV dramas

I'm surprised to see Oz so high on iMDB. I really liked it but I wouldn't imagine its many peoples cup of tea. Like Deadwood I think the initial series or two are amazing but the quality eventually dips.

If I was to rank my current favourite US dramas it would be
10/10 - Mad Men, Game Of Thrones, Breaking Bad
9 - Justified, The Walking Dead, Southland
8 - Dexter, Damages, Homeland, Sons Of Anarchy

Homeland lost it for me. Too long and became a bit silly.
